Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana)

Didelphis virginiana occurs in North and Central America, from southern Ontario and southwestern Quebec through the United States and Mexico, south to Costa Rica; from lowlands to 3,000 m. The West Coast populations were introduced. Virginia Opossum is found in a variety of habitats, but prefers deciduous woodlands and thickets near streams and swamps, including man-modified fragmented landscapes. It has grayish-brown fur with long white-tipped guard hairs; the legs are dark, and the head is greyish-white. The tail is long, hairless, and prehensile. D. virginiana is omnivorous, feeding on insects, snails, earthworms, small vertebrates, carrion, fruits, and other plant matter. This species is known for feigning death, when threatened.
